After a while, Yvonne made sure Diana had gone back to her room before pulling out her phone. She dialed a
number. "Hey, everything's set for what you promised me, right? | have to place in the top ten!"
Whatever the person on the other end made her tension ease. A smirk played on
her lips.
It was soon Saturday. The Southdale Physics Competition was being held by the provincial government at
Southdale Central Elementary.
Yolanda met Madeline at seven thirty in the morning. After getting off at the subway station near the elementary
school, they still had to walk two blocks.
"How prepared are you feeling, Yolanda?" Madeline was getting nervous as they walked closer to the contest

"I'm sure I'll take first place," Yolanda said casually.
"Huh? First place?" Though Madeline knew Yolanda was brilliant, hearing her declare so confidently that she
would be the champion still shocked her.
"I hear the questions are super difficult... but go for it, Yolanda! I really hope you get first." At that moment,
Madeline thought maybe it would not be so impossible for Yolanda to win first place after all.
As they rounded the corner, they could see the school gates of Southdale Central Elementary. It was just across
the street. While waiting for the light, they noticed a crowd gathering at the left intersection. A flashily-dressed
young man was yelling at an elderly man.
"Yolanda, the light's green!" Madeline called out when Yolanda did not move.
"Go ahead without me. | need to check something." Yolanda headed toward the crowd, which was growing larger
by the minute.
"Watch where you're walking!" the young man named Kane Barrett shouted arrogantly as he pointed at the
elderly man. "You broke my headlight, and you're paying for it!"
"You're the one who ran the red light and nearly hit me! I'm not blaming you for it, yet you're askingto take
responsibility?"
The elderly man's nwas Colin Rothman. He was well-dressed in a suit. With graying hair and glasses, he
looked quite distinguished. But veins were now bulging in his neck as his face turned red with anger.
Apparently, Colin had been crossing the road when a car suddenly swerved out. Kane had not braked in tand
had to swerve hard to avoid him, so he hit the guardrail instead.
"So what if | ran the red light? You're going to pay for it since you didn't watch for cars!" Kane said rudely. "You're
not leaving till you pay me!"
"Kids these days are too much. How dare he act all entitled when he's the one running red lights?" someone in
the crowd spoke up for Colin.
But Kane threatened them and said, "Shut it! If anyone else wants to run their mouths, I'll knock their teeth out!"
After Kane said that, his two companions behind him rolled up their sleeves to flex their muscles at the crowd.
One of them even told Colin smugly, "You better apologize and pay up quickly. You don't want to mess with Mr.
Kane!"
