Chapter 223
"Mr. Zimmerman, I'm sorry about last night—I really thought Timothy wouldn't
show up."
Vince shook his head. "No, | should be the one apologizing. I'd already spoken to him, and he said he wasn't
coming. Someone else in my family must have invited him behind my back."
The truth was, when Vince called Timothy and told him not to cto his grandfather's birthday dinner, he'd
only done it to take a jab at Timothy. He never really intended to keep Timothy away. He'd said it because he
couldn't imagine Timothy leaving Jessica's side, but he also didn't want Jessica to realize he was lying. In the end,
he still wanted to be close to her.
He couldn't say exactly why, but there was something different about seeing her compared to everyone else.

for you, actually. There are two things he wantedto pass along."
Jessica looked up at him, giving him her full attention.
"First, Lorenzo askedto see if you'd consider applying for heritage preservation status for your craft. Second,
my grandfather wants you to be his goddaughter. He wanted to ask you last night, in front of everyone at the
party, but you left early, so he didn't get the chance. He also has a gift for you, but he hasn't had the chance to
give it yet."
The reason the gift hadn't been given was simple-Larkin wanted to see Jessica again, and have a proper
conversation with her.
Jessica thought for a moment. Applying for heritage status seemed like a good idea; it would help fulfill a wish
her grandmother once had.
But as for becoming Larkin's goddaughter... that was more complicated.
He thought highly of her, and it would seem cold to refuse. But if she agreed, knowing she had only six months
left to live, she'd just be bringing more grief to another family.
Jessica typed on her phone, "Why is Larkin being so kind to me? Is it just because of my paper cutting?"
Vince read her message and smiled. "That's not the whole story. There's something | haven't told you yet. When |
brought your work home, my grandfather recognized it immediately-he knew it was your grandmother's style.
She was his first love..."
Vince shared everything Larkin had ever said about Jessica's grandmother. Jessica hadn't expected that.
She could barely remember her grandfather, and her mother had died young. Her father had disappeared long
ago, and she hadn't seen him since. She knew almost nothing about her grandmother's youth.

She typed another message: "If that's the reason, then I don't think I need to bechis goddaughter. I'll still
visit him often. Mr. Zimmerman, you know I'm just an ordinary person. My marriage to Timothy was a fluke-we'll
be getting divorced soon. I'd rather not get too involved in his world. | hope you understand."
Just a naive girl, finding herself suddenly part of the Zimmerman family-anyone else in her position would have
jumped at the chance. It would have helped her standing with the Lawsons, too.
But Vince understood where she was coming from.
She'd been married to Timothy for years, and he'd never brought her to any social events. She had no influential
background, so it was no wonder she didn't fit in with Timothy's crowd.
It seemed she really was determined to go through with the divorce.
"Jessica, you know how Kane never knows when to keep his mouth shut. Back at Red House, he said things about
you that got Timothy furious. Honestly, Timothy doesn't seem like he doesn't care about you. And you two have
a six-year-old son. | just don't get it-why are you so set on getting a divorce?"
