Chapter 874
Harvey felt a chill run down his spine, his throat suddenly too tight to utter a word.
"| asked you to keep an eye on Wayne because | suspected he was meeting with someone behind our backs."
Avery's laugh was cruel, mocking. "What did | say? In this world, only the dead can be completely trusted."
"Mr. Chambers, you're like a mind reader!"
Harvey was a mix of awe and admiration. "But how did you figure out Wayne was up to something?"
"That day, out of the blue, he asked about the progress of our new drug development. It struckas odd. He
had never cared about such details before."
Avery turned around and leisurely walked to the desk, picking up one of the many photos scattered across it, his
gaze turning icy.
It was the image of Thaddeus passing a lighter to Wayne in a coffee shop - a seemingly mundane exchange that
now seemed sinister.
Moments later, Avery's gaze turned fiery with anger as he crumpled the photo in his hand.
"You're planning to...?"
Harvey treaded carefully, "Forgivefor being blunt, but Wayne has been incredibly useful. He's handled so
much dirty work without the cops ever catching on, like a headless fly bumping into walls. And although his role
in Elmsworth isn't top-tier, he's got enough influence to obstruct police investigations, clearing numerous
obstacles for you.
Even if Thaddeus has been in touch with him, we don't know the specifics of their conversations. It could be a
trap set by their side to sow discord between you and Director-General Wayne. | don't think he'd dare betray
you, considering we have enough on him to ruin his life, not to mention his wife's frail health is in our hands. He
wouldn't risk it, right?"
"I don't need him anymore," Avery said with a dismissive tone.
"What did you say?"
"Last night, | got a call."
Avery's cold smirk hinted at his satisfaction. "The boss toldthe drug trials have made significant progress.
We can halt the experiments here in EImsworth. Since we don't need the trials anymore, | also don't need
Wayne, our ‘cleaner’, to take care of the messes. From the start, | never intended to keep him around."

Harvey felt a cold shiver run through him.
"He knows too much. No matter how loyal or useful he has been, | can't afford to keep him."
Avery paused, then looked at Harvey with an oddly gentle gaze, "But you, Harvey, are different. You're not just
my subordinate; you're like family. | wouldn't have gotten this far without the boss's support and your assistance.
Once things settle down, I'll have you join the Chambers Group's board and even make you a shareholder. Your
loyalty tois undeniable, and I, Avery, will not let you down." Harvey's lips quivered, his eyes brimming with
gratitude:
"Rest assured, Mr. Chambers! | swear, I'll never betray you, or may lightning strikedown!"
The Bright Group was experiencing an unprecedented turmoil.
Though York miraculously survived, his advanced age combined with severe shock leading to a stroke resulted in
total paralysis.
Zachary faced formal charges from the prosecution for incitement to murder, possession of illegal drugs, money
laundering, and bribery.
However, due to insufficient evidence regarding the human experimentation, the police didn't attribute this to
the Bright Group in their public statement, which only fueled speculation that higher-ups were suppressing the
truth. Overnight, the Bright Group's stock plummeted, losing over two billion in value and hitting the lower limit
for five consecutive days.
With their reputation in tatters, the company faced universal scorn.
The Bright Group's doors were besieged by banners with black letters on a white background, decrying them as
"inhumane" and "cruel", while reporters crowded outside, fanning the flames of public outrage.
Now, the Bright family was left to Suri and Chasel.
One had married off early and cut ties with the Bright family; the other, marginalized for years despite holding
shares, had never been involved in the company's management.
In an instant, the Bright Group was on the brink of collapse!
Today, acting with the authority of the chairman, Suri called an emergency board meeting.
She shed her dress for a sleek white business suit, adorning herself with a fox-tail lily brooch, a blend of white
and pink diamonds crafted by Evadne, and walked
into the boardroom amidst the directors’ predatory stares.
As soon as she entered, she felt their hostility but refused to back down.
The Bright family, she knew, could not fall.
"Ladies and gentlemen, you're all aware of the recent events at the Bright Group.
With the situation being critical, I'll get straight to the point."
Sitting at the head of the table, Suri exuded an air of dignified authority, undaunted. "Effective immediately, |
will be taking over my brother Zachary's duties as the chairman of the Bright Group."
A buzz of conversation erupted.
"Ms. Bright, or should we say, Mrs. Ashbourne now. You're no longer one of the Brights."
Someone jeered, "Especially since you had a falling-out with Mr. Bright years ago, choosing to becChairman
Emeric's mistress and severing ties with the Bright family. We haven't forgotten."
"For over twenty years, you've paid no mind to the Bright Group, and now, when trouble hits, you're the first one
leaping out, hoping to cash in on the crisis. Trying to snag a piece of the pie makes for a pretty ugly sight,
doesn't it?!"
The room buzzed with agreement, their disdain for Suri palpable.
"It's been nearly half a month since the Bright Group hit the rocks. I've used my own money to inject some
stability back into the situation, made calls to other project managers to keep things moving, liaised with the
press to manage the narrative, followed up on my brother Zachary's case, and took care of my nephew's affairs."
Suri's tone was calm, yet her words resonated powerfully, "I'd like to ask everyone here, what exactly have you
done for the Bright Group?"
Silence fell upon the room.
"If an 'outsider' likecan step up, what about all of you? You were either brought up by my father and brother
or have been long-term partners. Has even one of you stepped forward to do something for the Bright Group? |
didn't think
so."
Suri nearly let a curse slip in her frustration, but she swallowed it back down.
This is the Bright Group, not the Ashbourne family.
She hadn't quite managed to shift her identity yet.
The earlier loudmouth sneered in resistance: "Their mess is their own doing, with evidence piling up and the
police already on it. What could we possibly do? Besides, this is ultimately a Bright family matter."

Suri's eyes narrowed, a sly smile curling on her lips, "Oh, so now you're acknowledgingas part of the Bright
family."
The man choked, his face turning as sour as if he'd bitten into a lemon.
"Now, those in favor ofstepping in as the Chairman of the Bright Group, let's see a show of hands."
Suri raised her hand first, "This vote, | cast for my father."
But only one hand went up in support, the rest as silent as the grave, playing dead.
Another voice challenged, "You want to be the chairman? Do you even have the shares for it? With Chairman
Bright arrested and the case still in court, he hasn't been stripped of his assets and still holds his shares. Even if
you want this position, you should at least wait for the case to close, shouldn't you?"
Suri's fist clenched under the table, her complexion paling slightly.
True, she didn't hold any shares in the Bright Group. Even if she secured her father's and Chasel's shares, it
wouldn't be enough!
But it was clear to her, they were intentionally dragging this out!
By the tthe case was settled, what would be left of the Bright Group even if she did inherit Zachary's shares?
"Since there's no agreement, and Suri lacks the necessary shares, we'll be taking our leave!"
One by one, they stood, ready to leave Suri all by herself, to give this newbie a
taste of defeat. The thought alone was exhilarating!
"The meeting isn't over, where do you think you're going?!"
A sharp, commanding voice cut through the room, drawing everyone's gaze to the entrance-
Suri's gaze snapped up, only to see a man in a crisp suit, radiating an aura of authority as he stepped in. It was
Chasel!
Gone was the lab coat, replaced by the sharp lines of a business suit, his entire demeanor transformed, exuding
a commanding presence.
He and Cassius were indeed becoming more alike by the day!
"A bunch of old foxes ganging up on a decent woman, how very brave of you."
Chasel's eyes narrowed, his laugh cold as he glared at them, "Do you think the Bright family men are all gone,
leaving no one to stand up for my aunt?"
