Chapter 428 428: Auc
"Julian," he called after him, but Julian never stopped nor spared him another glance.
Josh sighed, slumping into the couch, his gaze complicated as his thoughts raced.
He had always carried the intention of settling the rift between him and Santiago's family especially now with
Jessica and Julian in the picture, and with the unexpected opportunity his trip to Country Y presented.
But the weight of his past wrongs pressed heavily on him. He couldn't bring himself to make peace... To put it
simply, he believed leaving the wound unhealed was the best form of atonement.
Perhaps, if the wrong was never reconciled, the Santiagos would continue to hate him, and his conscience would
never let him rest, forever pricking him, forcing him to live with guilt and unrest.
"Nora," he whispered bitterly, "maybe, just maybe | was wrong to step into your life in the first place."

~Hours Later~
The skylight of Country Y gradually turned grey, ushering in the night, lighting the city up with its neon lights as
it throbbed with nightlife.
A sleek black car rolled through the traffic with clear precision, headed towards an upscale auction house.
Davis sat composed in the backseat, his sharp gaze fixed on his iPad. His fingers swiped through the digital
catalogue, carefully studying the details of every item listed for the night.
His expression was as stern as if he were about to sign a multi-billion-dollar project.
Ethan sat in the passenger seat, attending to business calls, his gaze flickering to the serious figure at intervals.
When he was done with the last call, Ethan twisted slightly in his seat. "Did you find anything you like?" he
asked.
"I suppose so," Davis replied, his tone thoughtful. But then I think something else should be attached to it," he
concluded.
Carefully, he circled a few of the items on sale and handed the tablet to Ethan. "You should work on these two."
Ethan took the pad, his eyes widened. "The necklace?" he asked, bewildered, his gaze shooting back to meet
Davis' gaze.
Over the years, Davis had attended the auction with just one purpose—not buying collectibles, not buying
antiques but lands of any sort, no matter the place and location.
With this act, the Allen family had been able to expand their territories, erecting different companies on different

Davis nodded lightly. "Do you have any objections?" he asked with a mischievous grin.
Ethan shook his head. "Not exactly, | was just wondering why you changed your mind this time," he said, while
taking a careful study at the provenance of the items.
"| guess it's worth the price attached," he concluded.
With Davis' choice of the item, Ethan made a few deductions himself and nodded in silent approval. "She
deserves it," he muttered under breath.
"Were you able to get your hands on the guest list?" he questioned.
"No chance. It says the guests are all power players and can't be revealed... strict privacy," he reported.
Dauvis' lips curled up. "I guess it had to be war then... make preparations, | must get this particularly regardless of
the price," he smirked.
Ethan nodded, retracting his gaze back to the road while he made a few calls, setting things in motion.
Meanwhile, Davis' mansion lay in quietness, bright neon lights illuminating the entire compound.
Jessica stepped out of the nursery dressed in a midnight blue haute couture blazer, its sharp cut showing off her
figure. The blazer had fine stitching along the lapels and crystal buttons that caught the light.
She wore matching tailored trousers, sleek and crisp, paired with pointed heels that added a little to her height.
Under the blazer was a simple ivory camisole that softened the look.
Her hair was let down, clipped loosely at the sides not to fall over her face, with small diamond studs on her
ears.
A slim leather clutch rested in her hand, a gold limited-edition watch clasped firmly on her wrist.
Deborah trailed closely behind her, her face creased with worry. "Are you sure you will be fine?"
Jessica felt amused. "Don't fret about me, | can handle every task with clarity," Jessica tried to explain with a
smile.
A few thoughts crossed her mind: If Deborah could be this worried just because she is going out now, how much
had she worried during the accident. At this thought, she sighed helplessly.
"Then, you should take more guards with you?" Deborah pressed.
"Don't worry, | will be fine," Jessica encouraged, just as her phone cut through the quietness of the living room.
She pulled out her phone, glanced at the caller ID, then turned to Deborah. "Don't worry about me, | promise to
be back in one bit. | will only handle official matters."
Deborah nodded resignedly as she watched her step into the night. A sleek black car stood waiting; as she
approached, the door of the backseat was opened and she boarded.
With one last honk, the car slowly pulled away from the compound.
Jessica couldn't help but glance behind and found Deborah still standing at the doorstep, watching her car pull
farther away.
"Had she always been like this?" she asked.
Richard nodded. "I guess. She didn't prepare a fruit platter and snacks for you to go with tonight?" he teased.
"She wasn't expectingto go out tonight," Jessica responded.

Despite their working relationship, which he cto discover had thinned out over time.
"Any changes on the item?" she asked, her tone unbothered as she leaned her head on the headrest, her eyes
shut.
Richard retracted his thoughts. "None at the moment," he answered.
"Alright, | bet they will be," Jessica bellowed.
Richard glanced at her in surprise. "What do you mean?" he probed.

"I think that goes a long way in deciding its existence," Richard smirked.
Jessica sighed, she opened her eyes, a glance at the clock. "Speed up," she clipped.
Richard glanced at his wrist and nodded. "Almost behind schedule," he said, his tone supporting.
"Yes ma'am," the driver clipped while he stepped on the gas pedal, and the car shooting out like an arrow
