Chapter 1613:
Off to the side, Jesse was seated cross-legged on the carpet, halfway through a puzzle. He glanced up at his
sister, then at their parents, reading their silence. Nina didn’t know the full story about Kristian. But Jesse did. He
knew what kind of knot existed between Kristian and their mom.
And for a moment, he wondered if his dad was upset. Still, he said nothing.
Nina, oblivious, turned toward Freya again. “Have you been to Jeucwell?”
Freya exchanged a glance with Ellis before replying. “Yes.”
“Was it fun?”
Freya smiled, this twith a touch of wistfulness. “It was.”
If her mother were still alive, she and her father would probably be retired there by now, strolling Jeucwell’s
scenic streets with no clock to answer to. Her mother had adored that place.
“Can we all go visit Uncle Kristian together?” Nina wriggled closer, her eyes wide and hopeful. “After we play, we
can invite his parents too—for Christmas dinner!”
Before either adult could respond, Jesse jumped in, speaking for both. “Mommy and Daddy are busy. They can’t
go.”
This girl really had no idea. Suggesting they all visit Kristian was like asking for a storm in December.
“But it’s vacation time,” Nina protested, blinking in confusion. “Aren’t you not supposed to work during
vacations?”
Jesse looked at her like she’d asked why the sky was blue. “When you're grown up, there’s no such thing as
breaks,” he said sternly. “They visit their parents every week. They're too busy.”
“Fine.” Nina surprisingly dropped the subject.

clutching her smartwatch like it was a prized possession.
Outside in the yard, she called Kristian, pacing in playful circles with wide smiles and cheerful chatter as she
described what games she wanted to play in Jeucwell.

Not long after her call ended, a familiar car pulled into the driveway. Jerstepped out, his shoulders squared
beneath a thick navy coat, and his hair a little tousled by the wind.
The moment Nina spotted him, she lit up. “Jerome!” she squealed, sprinting across the yard.
He barely had tto brace himself before she flung her arms around his waist, the sudden force making him
stagger a step back. “Jerome, why are you here?” She was practically bouncing.
After Melvin and Jessica’s wedding, Nina had much more tto spend with Jerand Jasper. They had an
innocent bond that meant the world to her.
