Chapter 54 The Rivers Family Doesn't Deserve You
Lucas had no affection for anyone from the Rivers family. When he heard the update, he simply waved it off. “Got
it. No need to arrange for someone to take her home. Once she sobers up, she'll leave on her own.”
“Yes, sir.” Andrew, ever the thoughtful assistant, figured there was no need to bother with a guest room-cooling
off in the hotel lobby would do just fine.
When Lucas returned, Sloane was lounging on the sofa flipping through a magazine. She looked up at the sound
of his footsteps. “All done?”
“Yeah.” Lucas figured she ought to know. “Just now, Sloane's mother brought a bunch of reporters here
demanding to see you. Andrew knocked her out.”
Sloane froze. It took her a moment to realize he was talking about her mother.
Looking for her? With reporters?
That was her loving’ mother, alright.
Lucas had been watching her face closely, worried she might be upset. He knew all too well what that felt like.
“The Rivers family doesn’t deserve you.”

Sloane glanced at him, realizing he was trying to comfort her. She gave a light shrug and smiled casually. “They
can’t hurtanymore.”
Not my heart, not my body.
Lucas could see how tightly she’d armored herself, and it made his chest ache.
She was barely eighteen-she should've been enjoying the sweetness of youth, surrounded by warmth and love.
But the Rivers family had forced her to grow up into someone who had to protect herself like stone.

Sloane stood up and streiched. “I'm exhausted. I'm heading back.”
“Ill take you,” Lucas said, rising to his feet.

She changed into her now-dry clothes, while Lucas waited for her in the hotel
garage.
Whether it was the comfort of the car or Andrew's smooth driving, Sloane leaned back against the seat and
drifted off.
Lucas sat silently beside her, watching her sleep, more intrigued than ever. She looked small and fragile, yet
somehow had survived all the pain the Rivers family had thrown at her-and cout stronger for it. Hardship
hadn't broken her. It had refined her.
When the car rolled to a stop, Lucas finally looked away.
Sloane slowly opened her eyes, groggy and still half-asleep. She rubbed them and asked, “We're here?”
“Yeah.” Lucas suddenly remembered the special admissions exam. “Stonebridge University delayed releasing
the scores. It was an internal decision-had nothing to do with the students. You don’t need to worry.”
Sloane had never doubted her abilities. But hearing that, she asked curiously, “So... you've seen the results?”
Lucas nodded without hesitation, but didn’t satisfy her curiosity. “You'll find out when they're officially
announced.”
“Tech.” Sloane rolled her eyes at his cryptic tone but didn’t push it further.
She opened the car door and stepped out, stretching lazily. The cool night breeze sobered her up immediately.
“I'm off. Thanks,” she said, waving back without looking, then walked straight into the Rivers estate.
Lucas remained in the car for a long moment before finally instructing Andrew to drive.
