Lucas acted like he hadn’t heard a thing. Instead, he looked calmly at Sloane. “I'm not the one who owes anyone
an apology.”
Adrian caught the message right away. He reached behind and pulled Samantha forward. “Sammy, apologize.
We're all family-she won't hold it against you.”
Samantha's eyes immediately turned red. Big teardrops welled up and started falling in a tic cascade.
Between sobs, she choked out, “I didn’t mean it, really. Please forgive me. It was all my fault, | shouldn't have
said those things. But | swear | meant no harm. Sob sob sob...” Her crying grew louder by the second, as if she'd
been terribly wronged.
Summer rushed to her side and threw an arm around her protectively, glaring at Sloane. “We're all friends here,
Sloane. Why are you being so aggressive?”
Sloane had just learned from Jill who Summer really was. She hesitated, debating whether to let it slide for
Lucas’s sake.
But Jill couldn't take it anymore. Her face was flushed with anger as she stormed over, pointing at Summer.
“You've got snerve. Who's been stirring the pot this whole time? And now you're blaming Sloane? Must be
real proud of that Summer family upbringing.”
“Alright, enough,” Samson strolled over at his own pace and stepped between them. “Are we bowling or not?”
“Hmph!” Jill glared at Summer and pulled Sloane away toward another lane.

Lucas cast a seemingly casual glance over Adrian and the others—but the subtle intensity in his gaze sent a chill
down Adrian’s spine. Then Lucas turned and walked toward Sloane.
Adrian stood frozen, the weight of that glance like needles on his back.
“Benjamin, con, let's go head-to-head,” Samson said cheerfully, shrugging off his jacket and pulling
Benjamin off to bowl.
Sloane stood nearby watching Jill play. Despite her energy, Jill's technique clearly needed work. Her throws either
veered wildly or lacked force altogether. The ball would roll sluggishly down the lane and knock over just a
couple of pins. Jill frowned, visibly frustrated. “What's going on? Why do | keep messing up?”
Cameron tried to comfort her. “Everyone’s like that at the beginning. A little more practice

and you'll get the hang of it.”
Jill shot him a glare. “Easy for you to say—you’re not the one missing every shot.”
Sloane chuckled at their back-and-forth.

Jill jumped to block her. “What’s wrong with you, Summer? You know Sloane doesn’t even bowl, and you still
want to challenge her?”
Summer rolled her eyes impatiently. “Save it. Whether she can play or not is her problem. If she’s scared, just
say so. Don’t hide behind excuses.”
Jill trembled with rage. She'd never met anyone this unreasonable. If Summer weren't a Summer, she'd have
already knocked her flat.
Sloane lightly patted Jill's shoulder,

“I'm not playing.” Sloane's reply was flat.
