agreement.
Kaia flipped it open, the edges crisp and cool under her fingers. A strange knot coiled in her gut.
It turned out to be sdeal between Alfly Entertainment and sproduction company for Luna.
Alden certainly wasn’t skimping. He'd hired a top-tier team.
Then she glanced at the eight-figure sum on the contract, and her lips twitched.
Alden was watching her intensely, hoping to see a flicker of disappointment.
Instead, she leaned forward, studying the document line by line, her expression cool and razor-sharp.
He wasn’t proud of it, but he'd called her here for one reason: to rattle her.
To prove—maybe just to himself-that she wasn’t over him.
But now watching her co commaand

“You're not angry?” Alden asked quietly.
Kaia didn’t even look up from the contract. A hint of amusement touched her voice. “Work makeshappy. Why
would | be angry?”
She slid the contract back across the desk, pages perfectly aligned. “The agreement's solid. Just one issue-
breach of contract penalties need adjusting. I've marked the edits.”
Alden’s eyes were locked on her before he finally grabbed those papers. “Very good, Ms. Domont. Professional as
always.”
He lifted his gaze again, eyes narrowing. “You sure you don’t want to renew with us? | can double the rate.”
Kaia stared at him for a beat.
Look at this rich idiot...
She plastered on her fake smile. “We would be happy to do so. But for personal reasons, | won't be your primary

Alden’s eyes went ice cold. “Don’t bother. If you're out, we're
done here.”
Just as Kaia stood up, Luna pushed open the office door. “Alden, | was wondering if...”
Luna’s words trailed off as she noticed Kaia in the office.
Her expression stiffened slightly, and she offered an awkward smile. “Oh, Kaia, you're here too! | was just in the
neighborhood. Thought I'd grab lunch with Alden. You should join us!”
Her words were an invitation. But her eyes screamed: Don’t you dare.
Kaia briefly considered messing with her, then decided it wasn’t worth the effort.
Right now, she wanted miles between her and this soap-opera train wreck.
“No, thank you. Wouldn't want to intrude. I've got somewhere to be.”
An inexplicable irritation churned in Alden’s chest. “Wait, I'll walk you out. We're heading downstairs anyway.”
He looked tenderly at Luna. “Let's go. Weren't you hungry?”
God, can’t he just leavealone? Kaia cursed silently.
Kaia stepped into the elevator first and pressed the button for B2.
Alden and Luna stood side by side.
When the display hit the 12th floor, the elevator gave a couple of jarring lurches, and the lights flickered out,
plunging them into darkness.
Kaia went rigid, pressing herself against the cool metal wall.
“Alden, what's happening? I'm so scared!” Luna’s voice was a pathetic, trembling whisper.
Alden immediately pulled her into his arms. “Don’t worry. Someone will get us out of here.”
He pressed the emergency button, but it was dead.
Alden glanced at his phone, one measly bar of signal.
“Kaia, you got any bars?” he suddenly asked.
Kaia was dazed, her back already damp with sweat. “No... Nothing.”
Alden seemed to pick up on her distress. “You okay?”
Just as he spoke, the elevator lurched violently again.
“Aahh!!1”
The screaming Luna in Alden’s arms captured his full attention.
“Alden, I'm so scared! We're not going to be stuck in here, right?”
He could feel Luna trembling in his arms, and any concern for
Kaia vanished.
Alden frowned and dialed 911. “Yes, we're trapped in an elevator. Alfly Entertainment. How long will it take? ...
Alright.
Got it.”
After hanging up, Alden soothed Luna
in a gentle voice. “Oka don't gen

Neither of them noticed Kaia. Her face was ghostly pale.
Kaia fought against the rising panic.
Don't lose it. Not here. Not in front of them.
She backed away from the center of the elevator until her spine
hit the cold metal wall. Then she slid down-slow, shaking- until she was crouched low, hugging her knees to her
chest.
The walls... They're closing in.
No-they’'re breathing. Smothering me. | can’t... | can’t breathe...
She could barely register the lovebirds in front of her. Their voices, though close, seemed miles away.
Helplessness and despair washed over Kaia.
She choked back a sob, not daring to make a sound.

“Shhh, it’s okay, don’t cry. I'm here. I'll always protect you. Okay, Luna? Be good.”
Twenty minutes later, with a screech of metal and a grunt of effort, the elevator doors were finally pried open.
“Everyone inside okay?”
Alden waved a hand. “Yeah. My sister's terrified—get her to a hospital. She needs a doctor.”
As if suddenly remembering, Alden whirled around, his voice caught in his throat.
